We hear and read a lot about delivering value, yet it can be a nebulous thing. What it means to “improve value” in a business, can mean different things to different people within the business.

Ask the average person within a business how to deliver functional value, and a common response is “I’m not sure”.

It is important to look at value on multiple levels: Strategic, Operational and Customer. There are some easy ways that you can tap into and improve your businesses value stream.

  • Ask your customers what they value about your product and service and use that as a starting point.
  • Look for ways to grow the things that differentiate your business from others.
  • Simplify how you do things and remove as much complexity as you can.
  • Maximise the effectiveness of the technologies and systems that you use.
  • Make sure you have the information you need to adequately run the business.
  • Repurpose and reuse materials and products.
  • Spend some time each week analysing and challenging functional areas of your business, looking for ways to improve how you operate.
  • Quality and consistency is mandatory, look for ways to improve and maintain it.

Value matters and untapped value is wasted time, effort and money.
