We mentioned in our last newsletter that we were making good progress in assessing a new M2M or Telematics offering so we thought we would share our findings with you.

Firstly, what is machine to machine communication and who cares? Well we do! In our ever increasingly connected world we see a proliferation of devices that can transmit information about their status. This includes everything from vending machines, telling you how many items they have left, to vehicles that can tell you how well they are running, how quickly they are moving, their current location and more importantly if they detect any faults. This early warning can save considerable cost and inconvenience. Also, with the recent changes to the duty of care legislation in Australia employers need to ensure they provide a safe working environment both whilst at the primary work place and whilst visiting clients and customers, both M2M and Telematics can assist.

Our initial focus has concentrated on the logistical aspects of this market in identifying suitable devices, looking at data transmission issues, reviewing the capture, storage and presentation of the information captured. So far so good, but this was not as straight forward as we had hoped and four months down the track we feel far better positioned to assess future offerings. With the recent downturn in the economy we are honing the offering to ensure it not only saves time, effort and money but also generates new insight to fleet and asset performance.

We are working with our business partners to expand our future offering in light of the lessons we have learned and we believe there are better and more cost effective ways to achieve this end goal. Early in March we gain early access to a new project offering that is being driven by our Canadian colleagues and will keep you advised as to our progress. We are certainly not dismissing Australian content and some great work is also coming out of Melbourne.
